Schroth Scoliosis Exercise Therapy

Schroth Scoliosis Exercise Therapy

Schroth Scoliosis Exercise play a key role in stopping the progression of the spinal deviation and minimizing the degree of scoliosis with a better strength and body alignment.

What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is where the spine twists and curves to the side, either in “C” or “S” shape with more than 10 degrees of deviation. It most often starts in adolescence aged 10 to 15 years with unknown cause (adolescent idiopathic scoliosis).  Signs and symptoms of scoliosis may include uneven shoulders, asymmetrical pelvic height, leg length differences. Also, a prominence on one side of the back when bending forward.

There is also adult degenerative scoliosis starting in post menopausal period accompanied by pain.

Untreated scoliosis may cause pain in later life

PhysioOne’s passion towards scoliosis was inspired by the stories of many adult clients who consulted us for chronic pain over the last decade. Many of these patients, often unknown to them, turn out to have scoliosis causing their pain. In the past, scoliosis was often neglected in adolescence so the deviation of the spine inevitably and progressively deteriorated as the person grew into adulthood.

Thoracic scoliosis will often result in chronic neck and shoulder pain. Lumbar scoliosis may likely speed up spinal joint degeneration and indirectly causes leg length discrepancy, uneven weight bearing and overuse injuries.

Features of Schroth Scoliosis Exercise Therapy

Conventional therapeutic exercises are not effective, or they exaggerate muscles asymmetry. The overactive muscles become dominant and can easily become sore while the atrophied muscles are still very sleepy!

The treatment of scoliosis is an unmet need, which is why we are so excited about the  “Schroth” scoliosis therapy, which is effective and offers an individualized approach. Each scoliosis curve is treated using a personalized regimen after detailed analysis and classification. By achieving a better body alignment, clients develop awareness of their new body position, which they can then carry over to their daily activities. Many of our adult patients with intractable symptoms improve as they develop strength and flexibility through re-balancing their bodies’ asymmetry.

Scoliosis starts mostly in adolescence and during puberty. Early detection and early management can help to halt the deterioration, so adolescence is the prime time to tackle this condition. If the spinal curve is kept to a minimum, subsequently problems will not arise in adulthood. Schroth exercises play a key role in stopping the progression of the spinal deviation and minimizing the degree of scoliosis with a better strength and body alignment. In our experience every structural scoliosis curve has a functional correctable component.

Schroth Scoliosis Exercise is effective for

  • Stop the progression or improve adolescent idiopathic scoliosis
  • Prevention of symptoms or pain relief in adult scoliosis
